What Is A Fascia Board?

A fascia board is the board mounted at the point where the roof meets the outside wall of the building, known as the roofline. The fascia board is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof and is fixed directly to the lower ends of the roof trusses. The fascia usually supports the lower edge of the roof tiles and also holds the guttering along the edge of the building.

PVC Cladding provide UPVC fascia boards that are virtually a maintenance free solution, as their outer skins are resistant to climatic extremes and will not allow moisture to penetrate the core of the board. Our UPVC Fascia Boards can be shaped, nailed, drilled and cut, and unlike timber fascia boards, they hold a Class 1 fire rating.

What is the best material for fascia boards?

Whilst this depends on the type of property, PVC-U is generally the most popular material for fascias. It has a better resistance to fire than timber and it needs very little maintenance – a once a year washdown with soapy water will maintain a glossy, as-new appearance. Aluminium fascias are also sometimes found on commercial buildings, often sprayed to match the buildings’ colour scheme. PVC-U fascia boards are usually white or woodgrain in colour, although anthracite grey and black ash are also now a popular choice.

What size is a fascia board?

The height of a fascia board varies, depending upon the pitch of the roof and the design of the soffit detail. The most common sizes are between 150mm and 250mm for standard roofs, although fascia boards can be as large as 300mm. Fascia board thickness is usually between 18mm and 25mm, although 10mm cover boards can be used as fascia when supported by a timber backing board.

How do you seal fascia boards?

There is no need to seal PVC fascia boards, as their impermeable outer skin and durable PVC core makes them impervious to moisture – no protective treatment whatsoever is required. Timber fascia boards will need to be painted or treated with a wood preservative.

What is the difference between a soffit and a fascia?

Fascia boards are fixed to the bottom edge of the rafters of the roof. The roof covering (usually tiles or slates) projects over the fascia board slightly, allowing the rainwater to run into the guttering which is fixed along the length of the fascia board using fascia brackets. The soffit board is the section that runs from the rear edge of the bottom of the fascia board back to the brickwork, effectively closing off the eaves.
