How long do PVC fascia boards last?

Whilst all of our UPVC fascias have a manufacturer’s guarantee of at least 10 years, they will often last 20 to 30 years when installed correctly.

Are PVC fascia boards better than timber?

Unlike timber boards, UPVC fascias are a low maintenance roofline option since they are not prone to rotting or warping and do not need to be stained or painted. Instead, PVC boards only need to be wiped down with soapy water once a year or so. So whilst they may be slightly more expensive than timber boards upfront, PVC is actually the more cost-effective option over time.

How are fascia boards measured?

The measurements of all of the fascia boards on our website are measured externally. So for example, on a 150mm wide fascia board, when viewing the cross section, the 150mm width spans the top of the plain end of the board all the way down to the outer side of the return leg.

What is the difference between fascia boards and fascia capping boards?

Standard fascia boards usually measure 16mm-18mm in thickness, whereas capping boards are 9-10mm thick. Whilst both are used as fascia, standard fascia boards are designed to be used as a full replacement of traditional timber fascias, which is why they are sometimes referred to as replacement fascias. Capping boards however are fitted directly onto existing timber fascias that are still in good enough condition, and are mainly fitted for aesthetic purposes.

Barge Boards

Barge boards are used on the gable end of the roof to cover exposed roofing materials. What is a barge board?

Barge boards are the diagonal panels that are affixed to the roof gable and run upwards to create the apex of the roof. They serve both a decorative and functional purpose; they are used to cover and protect any exposed material from the roof. Traditionally, barge boards were manufactured using wood – however, the modern alternative of uPVC is far more low maintenance and requires less replacement over the years.

How to fit barge boards

Fitting barge boards is similar to installing fascia boards – however the very important difference is that the barge boards need to be cut differently to fit the shape of the roof apex. The ends of the board need to be cut to create the shape in the image on the right.

How to replace barge boards

To remove old barge boards, all you have to do is remove the old nails or screws that were used to fit the original barge boards and discard of them on the floor below. Be careful doing this, as if you’re high up on a ladder the last thing you want to do is lose your balance!

What is the standard size for a barge board?

Barge boards are generally offered in a range of sizes to suit a variety of properties. Our barge boards are offered in 18mm in the standard profile, with width options from 150mm to 250mm being available. All of our boards are 5 metres in length.
