Using The Correct Fixings for Fascia & Soffit
Whatever type of roofline products you are installing, it is always vitally important that the right type of fascia or soffit fixings are used.
When installed correctly, good-quality roofline materials will add stability and strength to any property, but using the wrong type or grade of fixing can undermine the project. This is certainly true of PVC products - trying to save money by using cheaper fixings will undoubtedly add considerable cost in the long run. In this guide, we’ll outline which types of fixings are best to use when working with different elements of the roofline.
Fixing For Fascia Boards
PVC fascia boards, which range in thickness from 16mm – 22mm, should always be installed using 65mm A4 grade stainless steel polytop nails. These polytop nails are available in colours in order to provide options that match every colour of fascia board, making them the best choice for fascia fixings.
Replacement fascias are load-bearing as they support the gutter system in its entirety, hence the need for such strong fixings. Two nails should be used at every rafter foot (usually 400mm spacing on new build projects). White fascia boards can be fixed at 600mm centres if the property has rafters that far apart, but woodgrain boards should always be fixed at 400mm centres.
Fixings For Capping Boards
Capping boards should be fixed using two 50mm A4 grade stainless steel polytop nails at 600mm centres for white boards and 400mm for woodgrain cover boards.
Since fascia capping boards are fixed to either existing timber fascias or a backing board, they don’t require fixings as long as those required to fix replacement fascias to rafter feet.
Fixings For Soffit Boards
Instead of nails, 40mm A4 grade stainless steel polytop pins are the ideal soffit fixings. Polytop Pins are both shorter and a smaller gauge than polytop nails, due to the fact that soffit boards are never load-bearing. The heads are also smaller, making them less obtrusive.
White soffits boards should be fixed with two pins at 600mm centres, and woodgrain boards at 400mm centres.
The exception to this is hollow soffit boards, which are secretly fixed to soffit bearers using 30mm stainless steel cladding nails. The lip of the board is nailed, with the fixing being covered by the next board.
